Steps
Step 1 of 6: Open Learning preferences
What to do: Select the "Learning preferences" button. It is in the bar at the top of every Learn Your Way page.
What you should see: A panel opens on the right side of the screen with the title "Learning preferences".
Why this matters: All the settings live in one place, so you only have to learn where one button is.
Need help? If you use a keyboard, press Tab until the button is highlighted, then press Enter. Press Escape to close the panel at any time.
Step 2 of 6: Try a preset
What to do: Pick one of the three presets: "Quiet and focused", "More reading space" or "One step at a time".
What you should see: The page changes straight away. The preset you picked is highlighted.
Why this matters: A preset changes several settings at once, so you get a comfortable page quickly. You can still adjust anything afterwards.
Need help? Not sure which one? "More reading space" helps if text feels crowded. "Quiet and focused" helps if the page feels busy.
Step 3 of 6: Choose a theme
What to do: Under "Theme", choose Dark, Light or High contrast.
What you should see: The colours of the page change. High contrast uses black, white and yellow with thicker outlines.
Why this matters: Some people read more comfortably on a light page, some on a dark one. High contrast makes every edge and button easy to find.
Need help? You can switch back at any time. Nothing you choose here can break anything.
Step 4 of 6: Adjust text and spacing
What to do: Choose a text size, line spacing and letter spacing. Turn on "Readable font" if you like simpler letter shapes.
What you should see: Text grows or spreads out. Lines may become shorter if you choose "Shorter lines".
Why this matters: Space between lines and letters can make long text much less tiring to read.
Need help? Your browser zoom still works too. Press Ctrl and + (or Cmd and + on a Mac) to zoom the whole page.
Step 5 of 6: Choose motion, pictures and reading aloud
What to do: Turn "Reduce motion" on to stop movement. Turn "Hide decorative pictures" on if pictures distract you. Keep "Read aloud button" on if you would like steps read to you.
What you should see: Animations stop, decorative pictures disappear, and a "Read this step aloud" button appears in guides.
Why this matters: Movement and extra pictures can pull attention away. Reading aloud lets you listen instead of read.
Need help? Read aloud never starts by itself. The "Stop sound" button at the top always stops it.
Step 6 of 6: Keep your settings
What to do: You can simply close the panel. Your choices are saved on this device. If you want them on every device, create a free account.
What you should see: At the bottom of the panel you see "Saved on this device" or "Saved to your account".
Why this matters: An account is optional. Reading is always free without one.
Need help? If you clear your browser data, settings saved only on this device are removed. A free account keeps them safe.
Every Learn Your Way page looks and behaves the way you chose.
