Spatial audio glossary
- Bed
- The fixed background layer of an immersive mix, such as a room or ambience. Beds sit in set channels. Objects move freely on top of them.
- Binaural
- A headphone version of a mix that keeps the 3D effect on any normal headphones. It copies how your two ears hear sound from different directions.
- Dolby Atmos
- A well-known immersive audio format used in cinemas, streaming and music. Spatial9 can convert Atmos mixes into other formats, such as Eclipsa Audio.
- Download
- Saving a file from Spatial9 onto your device.
- Eclipsa Audio
- An open immersive audio format, supported by YouTube and Google. It is built on IAMF, an open standard.
- Headphones
- The best way to hear spatial audio, because each ear gets its own sound. Any headphones or earbuds work. Use both sides for the effect to work.
- High contrast
- A theme with black, white and yellow and thicker outlines, so edges and buttons are easy to find.
- HRTF
- Short for "head-related transfer function": a description of how your head and ears change sound from each direction. Binaural audio uses it to trick your brain into hearing direction.
- IAMF
- An open file format for immersive audio. Eclipsa Audio is based on it.
- Immersive audio
- Sound that seems to come from all around you, including above, not only left and right. Also called spatial audio or 3D audio.
- Learning preferences
- Your settings for how Learn Your Way pages look and behave. Theme, text size, spacing, motion and more. Saved on your device, or to your account if you sign in.
- Loudness
- How loud a song feels overall, measured in LUFS. Streaming services turn songs up or down to a target loudness.
- Mix
- The finished balance of all the parts of a song: how loud each one is and where it sits.
- Mono
- Sound with a single channel. Both ears hear exactly the same thing.
- Niner
- The Spatial9 assistant. In Learning Mode, Niner answers in short, plain steps. Niner cannot see your screen or change your projects.
- Object
- One sound in an immersive mix that has its own position, such as a voice or a guitar. Objects can move over time.
- Panning
- Moving a sound between left and right. Spatial audio goes further and also places sounds in front, behind and above.
- Preset
- A ready-made group of settings you can apply in one go. For example "Quiet and focused".
- Project
- One song or video you are working on in Spatial9, saved to your account.
- Read aloud
- A button that reads a guide step out loud using your device voice. It never starts on its own. "Stop sound" always stops it.
- Reduce motion
- A setting that stops animations and moving effects.
- Render
- The moment Spatial9 builds the final audio or video file from your project. Failed renders are not counted against your limit.
- Spatial audio
- Another name for immersive audio: sound placed in 3D space around the listener.
- Stem separation
- Splitting a finished song into its stems automatically.
- Stems
- The separate parts of a song, such as vocals, drums, bass and other instruments.
- Stereo
- Normal two-channel sound: one left, one right. Most songs you hear are stereo.
- Upload
- Sending a file from your device to Spatial9.
- Workspace
- The page that lists all your Spatial9 projects.
- YouTube-ready video
- A video file prepared so YouTube can play its immersive sound.
